Best Plants for removing airborne dust

Earth is the most beautiful creation of God and reflects his image that makes the earth sacred. All the living and non-living things including trees, animals, mountains, river, seas, air etc. reflect the image of creator who is also the source of all life on earth. The earth gives us all that we need hence, it is our responsibility to ensure that all the things that are required for survival of living beings are available to them now and in the future.  In order to fulfill his greed, modern man is polluting, wasting, and degrading the earth. In these days, earth is crying because of disrespectful lifestyle and limitless growth and development activities. Global warming and other forms of climate changes are thus a major concern for all of us today.

In present times due to rapid industrialization and urbanization environmental pollution has become the biggest menace for the survival of living beings. Pollution may be of air, water, soil or sound. Over exploitation of open spaces, ever-increasing number of automobiles and demographic pressure has further aggravated the problem. There are various ways and means to mitigate the environmental pollution. But planting thousands of trees across the world is one of the biggest and cheapest ways to control pollution. While selecting the plant species for pollution control some important characteristics could be considered like plants should be evergreen, large leaved, rough bark, indigenous, ecologically compatible, low water requirement, minimum care, high absorption of pollutants, resistant pollutants, agro-climatic suitability, height and spread, canopy architecture, growth rate and habit, pollution tolerance and dust scavenging capacity.

Modern research has proved that trees such as Tamarind (Tamarindus indicus) having smaller compound leaves are generally more efficient particle collectors than larger leaves. Similarly, the shape of leaves of Mango (Mangifera indica), Ashoka (Polyalthea longifolia), Pongamia (Derris indica) and Umbrella (Thespepsia populnea) trees captured higher amounts of dust as compared to other plants. Trees like Neem (Azadirchta indica), Silk cotton (Bombax ceiba), Indian laburnum (Cassia fistula), Gulmohar (Delonix regia), Pipal (Ficus religiosa), Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Indian lilac (Lagerstroemia indica), Pagoda tree (Plumeria alba), Java plum (Syzygium cumini) have found more suitable in urban environment. Scientists from China on the basis of their study suggested that, plant species, that could remove atmospheric dust efficiently are Koelreuteria paniculataUlmus pumilaSyringa oblataMalus micromaluWeigela floridaAilanthus altissimaSalix babylonicaRobinia pseudoacaciaLigustrum x vicaryiEuonymus japonicas etc. it is also found that, Chaenomeles speciosa is the best species for metal Cd phytoremediation, Sorbaria kirilowii and Syringa oblata are the best species for Cr pollution remedy whilst best species identified for other metals are Sophora japonica for both Cu and Fe, Ligustrum × vicaryi and Rosa chinensis for Mn, Prunus cerasifera f. atropurpurea for Ni, Populus beijingensis for Pb, and Populus tomentosa for Zn.

Indigofera tinctoria (Indigo): A potential source of anti-dandruff agents

Hair plays a vital role in enhancing the personality of a human as they are the first noticeable part of beauty for both men and women. Even minor changes in hairs like greying of hair, early hair fall affect the self-confidence and self-esteem of an individual. Premature grey hair, hair loss, dandruff, fungal infections are the common hair problems.  Dandruff is a common scalp disorder affecting almost half of the population at the pre-pubertal age and it is mainly  due to exposure towards microbes, chemical agents and biological toxin present in the environment.  Although the dandruff may be non-threatening, it can negatively affect person’s self-esteem and body image. The hair beauty of individuals to a great degree depends on the health, habits, diet, routine job, climatic conditions and maintenance. Scientists revealed  several etiopathologic pathways with complex mechanisms responsible for dandruff but it is widely accepted that  Malassezia  (l...

Know your cooking oils

Cooking oil is a plant, animal or synthetic liquid fat used in cooking, frying and also in food preparation and flavoring. It is one of the key items in our kitchen and plays a crucial role in the body. There are wide varieties of cooking oils such as olive oil, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, peanut oil etc. from plant sources and butter and lard are examples of animal-based oils.  Fats are hydrocarbon molecules and formed through replacement of the hydrogen of each hydroxyl group by a fatty acid. As three chains of fatty acids can be attached to each glycerol molecule, the resulting molecule is called a triglyceride (fat). Fats may be monounsaturated (MUFAs), polyunsaturated (PUFAs), saturated or trans based on their fatty acid composition. Saturated and Unsaturated fatty acids In saturated fatty acids, the carbon chain has the maximum number of hydrogen atoms attached to every carbon atom. If a pair of hydrogen atoms is missing because of a double bo...

Red and Blue Light Sensing in Plants

Photoreceptors allow living organisms to optimize perception of light in the natural environment and thus to gain information about their external world. Analyses performed in different organisms have revealed wonderful examples of structural modifications of the light‐sensing proteins themselves, as well as diversification of the signal pathways they use in relation with their evolutionary history and function. In different organisms, the same photoreceptor may have a very conserved role or may modulate different responses. Two different photoreceptors may be involved in the control of the same physiological response. Light signals are amongst the most important environmental cues regulating plant growth and development which is achieved through a suite of photoreceptor proteins. These photoreceptors can detect the presence, intensity, direction and color of light, and in turn utilize this information to direct their growth. In plants, many types of photore...
